Example of how a phobia may be created: Boy aged seven gets chased and bitten by a dog. The boy feels scared whilst being chased and then feels pain as he is bitten. Because of the way the human mind works the experience gets recorded, it becomes part of his memories. You could say that the more intense the emotions are at the time of the event the better the recording becomes, in fact it can become so good that he may only need to remember that event to feel scared and feel the pain of the bite. Now this wouldn't be to much of a problem if were not for another important function of our minds, and that function is to warn us of danger. Every time the boy sees a dog in the future his mind accesses the painful memory and he can feel scared and feel pain. This may happen even if he were only to see one in a magazine or on the television. You see his mind is actually trying to protect him from further danger, keeping him away from dogs. At an early age it's normal to generalise and the generalisation in this case is that all dogs will chase me and hurt me. Even as adults we can tend to generalise a little to often. The good news is that a persons imagination is much like a video recording and that means you can record over things, you can mess the recordings up so that you don't see them properly and never respond in the same way to them.
Example of how you could treat this phobia: Step number one is to get the client into such a good mood that it could last all day long, most people do this easily with bad moods, a person that is good at this kind of work will also be good at helping clients in and out of different emotional states. When I'm curing phobias it's normal to have the client feeling great throughout the entire phobia cure process. Step number two is to have the client think of the thing they are phobic of, this means to see it in their mind and then you go about messing up the recordings in effect. The ways in which you can do this are countless. What the therapist is looking to insure is that the client feels great as this process is being worked through. Step number three is to install memories of behaving in a more satisfying way in the situations that the client was once phobic. Step number four is to test that the work has been successful. Something that I would just like to add at this point is that you would never have a client face the thing they were once phobic of until you are absolutely 100% certain that the phobic response has gone so as to be sure of the clients comfort at all times.
The reality unfortunately is that not everyone that undertakes this kind of work is that good at it and this is why there are people around that have had phobias for years.
